LISTSERVES and NEWSGROUPS

The electronic discussion groups are more informal in nature and frequently blend botany and horticulture together. Listserves require a subscription and messages are automatically mailed to you at your computer mailbox, either as single messages or as digests. A digest is like a daily newsletter - all the individual messages are compiled and sent out as one combined message. Subscriptions to newsgroups are through Usenet, where you go to read them. After several days they are automatically discarded. All messages can either be saved or deleted. Listserves and newsgroups can be moderated, that is someone reads the messages and removes the bloopers. Or, either type can be unmoderated, and everything comes through. All the discussion groups are free of charge and generally anyone can subscribe and join the discussions. Botanical groups are especially known for their expertise and helpfulness. The essential commands for subscribing to each discussion group is provided after the description of that group. More information about the subscription process and ideas for expanding your search for mailing lists can be found in Some Relevant References at the end of this page.
